[This was ridiculous...]

[Sonic found himself wondering away from New Bark Town. He didn't know where he was or what kind of people lived there but he wanted no part of it. If they were anything like that weird lady (who, by the way, claimed to be his MOM), there was no point in sticking around.]

[Tucked under his arm was a dopey Slowpoke, the one that had come out of that weird red and white contraption (which was probably built by that egghead Robuttnik). He was looking for a place where he could safely put the poor, dumb critter before dashing off to properly investigate this strange place. Looking up the tall trees that surrounded him, he already had a pretty good idea of where he was going to be looking out from. Trees always gave him a pretty sweet vantage point.]

[But before doing that...]

[With his other hand, Sonic reached into his pocket and withdrew his brand new PokeGear... Which he had already dropped twice. Opening it back up and turning on the video, he had it look at himself, examining his new human face again. Though what he didn't realize was that he was recording what he was doing... He felt very uncomfortable looking at himself, but he couldn't look away. How could he possibly be turned human?? Did Eggman do this to him? Why?]

[Either way, when he saw Eggman again, he was going to get him GOOD.]

Slloooowwww.

[Sonic stopped looking into the 'phone' and turned his attention to the long-tailed pig he held, looking somewhat annoyed.]

Is that all you ever say?

[It didn't look up, only straight ahead. Sonic followed it's 100-mile gaze and stopped walking when he noticed that they were about to stroll into some tall grass. Oh! Maybe he could put the pig here! The grass was tall enough for it to hide, it was perfect!]

[He walked right in and made it to the center, putting the pig down.]

There you go, little buddy! You stay out of sight, ok?

[It stood there.]

[...]

... Aaaalright then. Later, dude. I guess.

[Sonic turned around to move on but felt his foot step on something, a large SQUAK following. Immediately he lifted his foot and looked down, realizing he had stepped on what looked to be a bird. Before he had the chance to apologize, it flew into the air, turned, and took a dive at him.]

AHH!

[He ducked out of it's way, but it just came back, diving again and again and again.]

HEY! STOP! I didn't mean to walk on ya, dude!

[After a few dives, it came down and fluttered around him, pecking and pulling on him.]

Ow! Cut it out! I'm sorry, ok?!

[Sonic tried waving his still recording 'Gear around, trying to get the bird to stay back. But it still didn't let up, not even close to intimidated by the poor human.]

[And all this time, the Slowpoke stood there, watching, seemingly not taking any of the current situation in.]

[Newbies never stop being hilarious to observe. Somewhere amid the camera being flung around in haphazard directions, Sonic might be aware of a voice filtering from the Gear]

You'll never get rid of it that way. Use your pokemon.

The strange animal you had with you when you got here.

[she explains amid the flurry of bird attacks and the unhappy sounds coming from the gear's owner. She sounds almost maddeningly calm amid the chaos, though makes no effort to hide the thin smile as she watches him get divebombed, flapped at, and pecked.]

It's called a Pokemon. If it's not out already, let it out of the red ball in your bag, give it a name, and tell it to fight that pidgey for you. That's its job in this place.

[Her brief tutorial may or may not be lost in the ensuing sandstorm engulfing the immediate area]

[ If Snake had any popcorn, he'd be eating it right about now. Instead, he's got the Pokegear propped up on a tablet and he's leaning on his elbow, watching it with an unimpressed look on his face. ]

That's your Pokemon, smart guy. You can't just leave it there.

You know, most newbies battle with their Pokémon, but I guess something tha dopey probably doesn't even notice the danger.

[Riku shrugs his shoulders, trying and failing to fight back a smirk.]

You gonna need some pointers or something?

Call it what you like [she agrees with a nod] It'll let you know if it doesn't like what you picked.

[It's her experience most pokemon are pretty lax about what they get called, considering some of the unsavory names she's heard fly over the network from others.]

Try pointing the gear at it. It should tell you what it is and what it can do.

[Poor boy, so helpless...]

You didn't set it free.

You need to use the PC in the Pokemon Center for that kind of thing, last I checked. [ Sigh. ] Use the Slowpoke to attack the bird so it'll leave you alone.

[Huh, so this guy hasn't caught on yet? Well, maybe he shouldn't be too hard on the guy. He's already looking pretty miffed as it is.]

First of all, every animal you'll bump into here is a Pokémon. Second, this whole world revolves around pitting them against each other in battles-- think dog fights, just with fire breathing dragons, aliens, and living ice cream cones. Does that clear things up?

[If not, well... hey, it's not too surprising. The world's a lot to soak in.]

[As an embodiment of sloth, Belphe finds a certain appreciation in watching a slowpoke at work. Too Slow exhaling a yawn and immobilizing the pidgey with lethargy is, to the middle sister, a beautiful thing.

She really needs to get herself one of those pokemon at some point...]

You could catch it now, if you wanted. Or just leave it where it is and walk away.

[If it were her, it would be Option B]

It should be fine after it sleeps, and even if it isn't, nothing can die in this place.

[AH, THE SMELL OF NEWBIE IN THE AIR.]

[If Sonic actually has the time and presence of mind to look at his screen in the middle of this, he'll see a scruffy-headed twenty-something in a dark coat.]

Throw a rock at it.

[She literally has popcorn. She's eating it as she watches him flail around with the bird. Sonic may want to second-guess any advice coming from this person's mouth.]

That's why wild pokemon attack you.

[The way she explains it, it's almost as if this ought to be common knowledge.]

Humans and pokemon have lived alongside each other so long in this place, apparently, that they've come to depend on one another. If a wild pokemon goes out of its way to attack you, it's usually testing you to see if you're worthy of making it your partner.

[Thinking it over, she allows] Sometimes they're just out to give people a hard time, though. Especially the ghost-types.

But like I said, as long as you're here, nothing can kill you, and you can't kill anything. It's a different game board from where we've all come from. Are you familiar with the idea of kakera?

[Because...that would make explaining this a lot easier, if he happened to be. By now, she's not especially hopeful]

Try telling that to all the locals.

[He shakes his head, tossing a Pokéball up and down.]

It's just the way this world works. Besides all that, fighting's the only way for Pokémon to mature. If they don't battle, they'll be stuck as small fry, barely able to fend for themselves.

Well, you could take it out on your own, if you don't mind getting arrested.

Oh yeah. You're new, so I guess you haven't figured it out yet.

Trying to kill these things is like trying to break down a door by hitting it with a pillow.

You could chuck a boulder at it and it wouldn't die.

[Faint, maybe. But not die.]

[ Snake grumbled somewhat under his breath... You do what you have to do to survive. That's all. Of course, Snake wasn't like his father... He didn't just eat a bunch of random things because. ]

Yeah, that thing. You should have extras... [ The old soldier takes a Pokeball out of his own bag, showing it to the gear. ] Your Pokemon starter should have come in one of these. You probably have four or five more in your bag that you use to catch other Pokemon.

Okay, so maybe dog fight wasn't the right word.

[He sighs, rubbing at his forehead.]

It's just the closest thing to them, but believe me, Pokémon fights aren't deadly. If they were, I'm pretty sure the locals wouldn't endorse them. To them, it's a sport and a huge part of their lifestyles.
